SUSAN RYDER DESIGN
ABOUT
SUSAN RYDER
I explore various subjects, but pattern and print fascinate me the most, especially when they are rendered in light and shadow. My medium is high quality Bristol Bond paper. Many of my methods are taken from apparel pattern making including curved folds and cuts. The resulting forms are sometimes surprising and are what drives my feeling of joy while making them.
In addition to cut paper art, my life’s work has been shoe design. From athletic to sky high fashion shoes. As seen through a designer’s eyes, shoes are essentially flat pieces of leather or fabric that are elegantly or innovatively combined to make a shape a person can wear.

My paper art is a reflection of that process. I take flat pieces of paper and fold, glue, stitch and otherwise manipulate them to create art. Like in a shoe you might love, details on my paper pieces are where emotional connections are formed.
